The BNP membership list was leaked in full earlier this week on the Intermeweb. The Guardian rather endearingly calls for “dialogue” with them, whereas AntiFa England – home of militant anti-fascism – claims that “Christmas has come early” and reckons glaziers, painters and decorators, and car re-sprayers will have their work cut out for them over the next few months.
It seems that reaction is split. There is a certain amount of sympathy that there has been a breach of privacy. Not to mention irony, as the party has to resort to the Human Rights Act to defend itself – an act they have always opposed.
Perhaps if BNP heads start getting cracked there may be even more sympathy for them. Which really could turn the whole thing round. Not good.
In the past, when far right nationalist groups resorted to violent street marches, people argued that physical confrontation with them actually stopped them becoming a mainstream voice. Now they have gone all “respectable,” it may be good to ask, what next?
We talk about giving fascists “No Platform” but they frequently have a platform, in councils and the mainstream media. And no one will go up against the BNP on TV and radio debates, so they remain unopposed there. If the BNP get their heads stoved in, people will accuse anti-fascists of using the same tactics they deplore in fascists against fascists!!!! If you see what I mean……
And if we talk about no platform for fascists, what about communists? I mean, Stalin locked up dissidents on gulags and they died there. Or what about proponents of liberal democracy, who wage wars and implement murderous economic structural adjustment on behalf of their corporate paymasters?!!!
“Oh, we’re not THOSE sort of communists/liberals/fascists…”
The fact is that whatever we have been doing up to now hasn’t worked. The BNP are the biggest far right party in this country’s history. I’m not at all sure about the answers. But these questions sure disturb me.
It will be interesting to see how this leaked list caper plays out.
