Today, President Bush made his first public statement following the attack by suicide bombers on the Virgil C. Summer nuclear reactor in Jenkinsville, South Carolina, which has left tens of thousands dead and created millions of potential victims of deadly nuclear fall-out.

In a televised address, he said:

My fellow Americans, and people of the world. We have suffered such a great loss and tragedy it is almost impossible to bare. But bare it we must. In times of trouble, it is necessary to turn to the words of the Jesus; words that we as a Christian, God-fearing people have always held dear. To those irregular US forces in Iraq who have committed atrocities on the local population as a result of this horrific attack in our country, I say to you:

Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God. For it is written, “I will take vengeance; I will repay those who deserve it.” (Rom 12:19)

It was also Jesus in his infinite wisdom and compassion who said:

Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable, (Rom 12:17).

And so, with my heart full of hope, I have asked leaders of the Muslim lands to join with me as people of the same God to forgive those who have committed this cowardly and despicable act. We must one and all refuse to surrender to terror. I have asked them, along with leaders of the other nations of the world, to sit down at the table and seek to rectify the wrongs that the current direction of global society has brought to the world and its people. Enough is enough.

They have responded to me unanimously: our pain is your pain.

And so, we move forward with one heart, mind and soul; and with the guidance of our great Creator, we will repel those evil-doers who will us drag our world into darkness and destruction, and prise open a new, brighter future for all the people of the Earth, believers and non-believers alike.

Probably.
