Pub Landlord

Spent an absolutely spiffing evening watching Al Murray aka the Pub Landlord on DVD. Very funny.

This comic creation is a Brit of the Little Englander variety. He spends his time laying into members of the audience, sparing his worse venom for students, Germans and the French. He gets people singing the National Anthem and Incy Wincy spider (true!) in a faux-patriotic fervour.

Non-PC as you like.

His press is interesting. Check out his website. The liberal-lefty Guardian loves it cos he’s obviously taking the piss. And the Times think he’s great cos even though he’s taking the piss, his rants are “disconcertingly sane.”

Something for everyone, then.

So this is what “traditional” British identity has become. A parody of itself. Or maybe not…..

I’m trying to work out what exactly we can seriously carry forward from the past in terms of what it is to be British, especially for those of us who are first or, (“half” in my case), second generation immigrants.

I reckon there’s a lot of good stuff despite all the colonial nonsense, funnily enough. I’m trying to put the idea into a new set of lyrics. The starting point is the pledge that new British nationals have to swear when they beome citizens. According to a British Embassy website, this involves an oath and a pledge:

…..The oath has been used for many years and basically the person taking it undertakes to bear true allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and her heirs and successors.

The pledge is a new condition intended to incorporate the basic values of British Citizenship and takes the following form: “I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British Citizen.”

Why the hell new citizens should have to do this – particularly swearing alleigence to the QUEEN!!! – and the rest of don’t have to bother is beyond me. There is a very interesting debate about British nationality and British immigration and asylum legislation here.

I think I shall write to the Home Secretary forthwith. poody said…

It’s a colloquial British phrase meaning to get out of your head on booze etc. Not that I do, I’m just interested in the idea of it.
