although an arts festival with a focus on music, it is a lot more than that. it’s roots lie in the hippy idealism, anarchism and alternative lifetsyles of the late 60s and early 70s, and u can still feel the vibes, man…..
when i first started going in 1990, i heard many of the old festival regulars say that “things aren’t what they used to be,” and that a creeing kind of commerialism was taking hold of it. nonetheless i had some truly amazing, life affirming and transformative experiences there and it certainly has played a part in my political development. i’ve been a punter, worked on stalls, played in bands, and generally tried to make myself useful about the place, (more of that later).
now, about 15 years later, i find that feeling come over me that i remember the old hands talking about. it has changed, the big companies have moved in and despite the fact that the money goes to good causes, (oxfam, water aid amongst many), it is a massive money fleecing operation.
but it’s roots are still there, and a certain spirit is still there. and thank feck for that!
